What can SWASH offer Venturers? Print

The first thing that Venturers can get from SWASH is familiarization days, or as we call them Water Activities Days. Typically we can take up to 40 people and we run a mix of canoeing, sailing and power boating around Sydney Harbour. However, this can be customized to say sail and canoeing only.

To further help with your activities we can train you. We believe as many people should be trained as possible, it makes it easier to run activities. This is particularly true for Venturers. As Venturers you have the capability to run your own Unit Activities within Scouting and your SIS qualifications can get you a job.

We offer standard Scout Skills training courses in Canoeing and Sailing. To run your activities you need Level 2 qualifications. Or if you already have the skills you can do a RPL day to test your prior experience. As Venturers we encourage you to get these qualifications so you can run your own activities.

We also run powerboat courses. This also enables you to get your NSW Powerboat licence.

How can SWASH help you with your Venturer badge work?

Below are some suggestions about how being active at SWASH can help you to achieve part of your Venturer badge work if you and your unit believe this is appropriate.

Venturer Award

Outdoor Badge – Successfully completing a Scout Skills course in either sailing or canoeing will gain you a new skill and will take longer than 10 hours. Alternatively if you already have skills you can attend an RPL and then show leadership on the water by helping on at least one Water Activities Day to futher develop your skills and to reach the minimum number of hours.

Service Badge – If you have qualifications then you can come and help as staff at least 2 of our Water Activities Days. This will get you the minimum 10 hours required.

Queen Scout

Outdoor Badge - Successfully completing a Scout Skills course in either sailing or canoeing will gain you a new skill. You can then futher develop your skills by helping on our Water Activities Days. Alternatively if you already have skills you can attend an RPL and then show leadership on the water by helping on enough Water Activities Days to futher develop your skills and to reach the minimum number of hours. If you are extending a skill from the Venturer Award then you can futher develop your skills by attending Water Activites Days as a helper and learning how to operate a safety boat and measure your skills by particpating in a major event such as the Sirius Regatta or the Port Neptune Regatta.

Service Badge – If you have qualifications then you can come and help as staff at at least 4 of our Water Activities Days or Course days. This will get you the minimum 30 hours required.

Endeavour Award

This can be achieved using SWASH in either Outdoor or Service. After completing the Venturer and Queen Scout requirements you can complete futher development by helping at SWASH with Water Activities Days, courses and maintenance work.

All of the above are great things that Venturers can gain by being involved with SWASH and having fun on the water. If you want to get involved or attend an activity we can be contacted: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

"SWASH is the best place to be on a Sunday. I have been part of the SWASH Staff for 4 years now. I have learnt a lot of these 4 years from the old staff of SWASH who have mentored me over these 4 years. I have learnt to sail, canoe and how drive a power boat, all that I wouldn't have, if it wasn't for SWASH."

John Wicks - SWASH Staff

See you on the water
